Goat entrepreneurs seeking bylaw exemption

Nanaimo City Councillors will be hearing an unusual request when they meet in committee Monday.  A company wants permission to leave goats at their client’s properties overnight.

Goats on the Hoof Vegetation Management hires out their animals to help clear away unwanted plants, like black berries or broom.

Tammy Dunakin runs a similar business in Seattle, and she’s working with Goats on the Hoof. She says the 10 year track record of her operation, Rent-a-Ruminant, shows it’s an idea that works.

Dunakin says they’re hoping Council will give them an expemption from parts of the animal control bylaw.  They also want permission to park an RV on site during jobs, so the wrangler overseeing the herd can stay with the goats.
