Province OKs Sechelt borrowing referendum, date to be confirmed this week

BC’s Inspector of Municipalities has given the green light for a referendum in Sechelt on borrowing money for a waste water treatment plant.

The District wants approval from voters to accept a Federation of Canadian Municipalities offer of a low interest loan of about 7.4 million dollars combined with a 1 million dollar grant.

Now that the Inspector has signed off, the District’s Chief Election Officer can set a date, and draft the question.

Mayor John Henderson says they hope to release those details on Thursday, with a likely date for the vote of March 8th.

Henderson says the District is also starting its campaign. At least two public information sessions are planned, with the first on Feb 11th, as well as outreach at Sechelt’s main shopping centre.

It’s not clear at this point if any organized effort is planned to oppose the borrowing.
