Crowder says Vancouver Island experience shows closing Vets Affairs offices a bad move

Nanaimo Cowichan MP Jean Crowder says the experience on Vancouver Island shows there’s good reason to oppose closing Veterans Affairs offices.

Protests are planned outside offices here in BC, and in Manitoba, Ontario, Nova Scotia, PEI and Newfoundland, which are all shutting down at the end of the day Friday.

The government says Service Canada centres will take on the job done by those offices.  But Crowder says when Veterans Affairs closed its Victoria office, Service Canada couldn’t pick up the slack.

The NDP has a motion coming up for vote Monday that calls for the offices to stay open, and for the government to hire more more mental health professionals to help Canadian Forces members and veterans.
