Ferries critic says BC Ferries should invest profits back into the system

NDP ferries fritic Claire Trevena says BC Ferries’ latest year-end results show they can afford to lower fares.

Net earnings topped $49 million dollars, compared to $18 million for 2014.

The North Island MLA says the company obviously made more thanks to increased fares and a fuel surcharge.

Trevena says Transportation Minister Todd Stone should be urging BC Ferries to invest some of that money back into the service, to make fares more affordable.

While BC Ferries says the profits mean they’ll be able to keep fare increases below the rate of inflation, Trevena says the Ferry Commissioner has already told them to do that.
