VIU issues statement on openness and respect in Nanaimo

Vancouver Island University and a host of community partners are circulating a statement saying Nanaimo is an inclusive community, where intolerance and racism don’t belong.

It’s in response to a recent incident where nine bus benches featuring ads for chinese real estate agents were defaced with ethnic slurs.

Steve Lane is Acting Provost and Vice President of Academics.

Lane says they’re encouraging people to go online to sign a petition they’ve started, to support an open, diverse and welcoming community.

The Nanaimo Asian Professional Association has also started a petition of their own to show support for immigrants blamed for rising property values.
