Islands Trust urging the province to invest in BC Ferries to keep fares down

The Islands Trust is calling for the province to spend money to make it possible to cut fares on the BC Ferries minor routes by 25 per cent.

Chair Peter Luckham says the payoff for the 11 to 14 million dollar investment would come through the boost to the local economy and the tax revenue that would result.

Luckham says a study from consultant Perrin Thorau & Associates also looked at one of the bigger routes in the area.

Luckham says the Trust Council is leaving it up to people on the Sunshine Coast to decide if they want to push the issue with Minister of Transportation.

Ferries CEO Mike Corrigan is going to be at the Council’s meeting next week.

Luckham says Corrigan knows about the fare cut idea, but that’s an issue for the province.  He says the Trust wants to hear from Corrigan about operational issues like schedules, and plans for new ferries.
