School closures still on the table in Qualicum

The Qualicum School Board is moving forward with possible school closures as it struggles with a looming budget crunch.

Tuesday night Trustees voted to accept recommendations to close Parksville, Winchelsea, Qualicum Beach and French Creek elementary schools. The decision triggers a 90 day consultation period.

Chair Lynette Kershaw says the Board is hoping to find a strategy to avoid the constant cutting needed to cope with what she calls “chronic undefunding” by the province.

Kershaw says potential school closures still won’t be enough. Even if they follow through on all the proposals,  the budget deficit will still be in the area of 1 to 1.5 million dollars.
