Council puts off decision on hotel deal extension

It’ll be another 2 weeks before Nanaimo City Council decides whether to extend a deadline in the agreement for the proposed Conference Centre hotel.

The company behind the project, SSS Manhao, is asking for an extra year to hit the benchmark of having the foundation done.

Mayor Bill McKay says some Councillors want more information on the deal the City made with the Chinese company.

One of SSS Manhao’s lawyers, Linda Chen, says the company plans to bring Chinese travellers to Nanaimo, and they’re still keen on the project, despite the delays.

Chen says there were several reasons the project fell behind schedule, including difficulties with visas for company officials and engineers.
