Gibsons to scale back Armours Beach plan, go back to public

Gibsons is going to hold off on demolishing a historic building at Armours Beach.

The town-owned building was once the municipal hall. It’s also been a rugby team clubhouse and community meeting place.  But it’s fallen into disrepair, and has termite problems.

Tearing it down is part of a redevelopment plan for the popular swimming beach that got mixed reaction at a recent open house.

Director of Parks Wendy Gilbertson told Council Tuesday night saving the building is probably not an option, but they could recognize the site’s heritage value in other ways including a replica of the original building.

Mayor Wayne Rowe says the plan is still very much a work in progress.

After hearing the open house results Council is also suggesting the plan be re-worked to drop a large new building in favour of going with something much smaller, basically a decent public washroom, while leaving the rest of the area natural.

Council also voted last night to bring in expert help to design new floats that won’t harm sensitive eel grass beds.
