Gibsons man launches national campaign for better controls on how traumatic stories are presented in newscasts

A Gibsons man is launching a national campaign for guidelines on how radio and TV newscasts deal with traumatic stories, like murders, plane crashes, or war and terrorism.

Educator and author Michael Maser is tying his “Choose News” campaign to the start of Mental Health Week across Canada.

Maser says research shows that, for children, seeing a traumatic event on TV, or hearing about it on the radio, can be as harmful as actually experiencing it.

Maser says he’s not really asking for big changes… he just wants to see the Canadian Association of Broadcasters update its “Violence Code”, and work with the CRTC to enforce it.
