Tourism dollars going to trio of Nanaimo organizations

Just under $30,000 from Nanaimo’s Tourism Development Fund is being split between three organizations with big plans. Tourism Nanaimo is giving $20,000 to the Nanaimo Science & Sustainability Society, $5,000 to the Summertime Blues Festival and $4,950 to the Nanaimo Mountain Bike Club.

The Summertime Blues Festival is considering adding a third day to the event. Dan Brady, Chair of the Tourism Leadership Committee, says the money will be spent on a feasibility study to look at whether they should incorporate other musical genres to help grow the event.

Brady says the Nanaimo Mountain Bike Club will use the money to work on completing the Fine China Trail behind Brannen Lake, which will be the city’s first legal mountain bike trail.

Finally, the Nanaimo Science & Sustainability Society is planning work with TELUS World of Science to build hands-on exhibits for an interim science centre in Nanaimo.

The Tourism Development Fund started in 2013. The money comes from the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation.
