RDN committee to study dam report

Nanaimo’s Colliery Dams aren’t the only ones in the area under scrutiny…

A review of 5 dams in the Regional District of Nanaimo shows they could cause a lot of damage if they failed.

RDN Emergency Program Coordinator Jani Drew says the Jump Creek, South Fork, Arrowsmith, Fouth Lake and Enos Lake Dams are all rated as “high consequence”by the province.  However, that’s not the same thing as being a high risk to fail.

Because the dams are mostly privately owned, the RDN didn’t have all the information until now, but Drew says having it means they can better prepare for a potential problem.  It also helps them work with the owners and operators of those dams.

The report on dam safety in the RDN will be reviewed by the Emergency Management Select Committee on the 24th.
