Dufferin Cres. blaze under investigation

Dozens of people were forced out of their homes Thursday when fire swept through 3 units of a Dufferin Crescent strata complex.

Nobody was hurt, but the 3 units were so badly damaged those people can’t return.

Mike Lumley works as a caretaker in the building.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Martin Drakely says they’re looking at those witness reports the fire may have started because of an electric barbecue, but for now they can only say it probably started outside one of the apartments.

The Dufferin fire wasn’t the end of the work for fire crews last night. They were called out just two hours later, for a fire at a home in the 4900 block of Fillinger Crescent. There are no details available on that one.
