Weston says there's room for improvement, but spill response wasn't as bad as some claim

West Vancouver Sunshine Coast MP John Weston says excellence doesn’t mean perfection when it comes to spill response on the BC coast.

The Conservative has been getting a lot of questions about the issue since the bunker oil spill in English Bay a week ago. Some of that fuel turned up on beaches in the West Van part of his riding.

Weston says he was impressed with the speed and effectiveness of the Coast Guard response, even if others weren’t.

Weston acknowledges, though, that there is room for improvement and he says he expects that improvement to come after a full review by the Coast Guard

But, he’s rejecting the NDP’s idea that re-opening the Kitsilano Coast Guard base and reversing cuts to communication stations will improve things.

He’s more supportive of the District of Sechelt’s resolution calling for an independent audit of spill response in BC. The Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities adopted the resolution at its recent AGM
