Mayor, Council congratulating rookie colleague on AVICC oil spill resolution

One of Sechelt’s rookie councillors is earning high praise from the mayor after they managed to get an emergency resolution adopted by the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities.

The resolution was spearhead by Councillor Noel Muller. It calls for an independent audit of oil spill response in BC, in the wake of last week’s spill in Vancouver’s English Bay.

Mayor Bruce Milne says Muller’s showed his colleagues a “textbook example” of convention activism.

Milne says Muller’s work paved the way for easy passage of the motion come Sunday.

Council voted Wednesday night to send their resolution directly to the premier and the federal government in the hope of seeing some action.

It reads:

Whereas the oil spill event of April 8, 2015 into English Bay and the Salish Sea, demonstrated a clear lack of capacity to respond to oil spill events in British Columbia;

And, Whereas the long-term viability and economies of BC coastal communities are dependent, in part, upon the protection and preservation of the local marine environment;

Therefore, Be It Resolved that the AVICC request that the Province of British
Columbia order an independent audit of the current state of oil spill preparedness in BC.
