Volunteers remove 5.8 tons of illegally dumped garbage from Nanaimo property

The group behind the Facebook page Stop Illegal Garbage Dumping – Vancouver Island is turning its frustration into action.

Louise Gilfoy started the group to draw attention to the issue of illegal dumping and publicly shame offenders. She says 27 of the group’s 4569 followers gathered on the weekend to help clean up a site on Rosstown Road in Nanaimo.

Gilfoy says it felt good to finally be doing something about the problem.

She says they’ve identified a couple other spots and will be organizing another cleanup in the next month or so.

They’re also encouraging people to help out the Ladysmith Sportsman’s Club with their annual trail clean-up this weekend. Volunteers are needed, especially thos with trucks or quads. The plan is to meet at 9:00am on Saturday at the Bush Creek Hatchery.
