Weston says sinking of the tug "Elf" highlights derelicts problem

West Vancouver, Sunshine Coast MP John Weston says the recent sinking of an old tugĀ  in Howe Sound comes as he’s working to get local governments together on the derelict vessel issue.

The incident involving the “Elf” also happened within days of a meeting of the Howe Sound Community Forum, which was attended by Weston and MLAs Nicholas Simons and Jordan Sturdy.

Weston says the number of jurisdictions involved is making the issue hard to tackle, and the “Elf” is a great example.Ā  It sank twice; in different places

Weston isn’t the only area MP taking an interest in derelict vessels.Ā  Nanaimo Cowichan’s Jean Crowder has a private members bill before Parliament that would give the Coast Guard expanded powers.
