Island Ferries misses deadline to start passenger-only ferry service

Island Ferries was hoping to have a passenger-only ferry service between downtown Nanaimo and Vancouver up and running by now.

The lease they negotiated with the City of Nanaimo hinged having it established by March 31, 2015.

Island Ferries Director David Marshall says they weren’t able to make that major deadline.

In the meantime, Marshall says they’re keeping in touch with the City of Nanaimo while they work of getting their funding lined up.

Marshall says they’re pursuing two possible ways of getting the $14 million they need. They’re applying for a federal government grant from the Building Canada Fund and talking to private investors.
