Ferry system sparks heated debate at Legislature

A motion from their Ferries critic had NDP MLAs on the attack today at the Legislature.

Ferries critic Claire Trevena wants support for a motion saying the ferry system needs to be part of the provincial infrastructure, and provide a benefit to BC’s economy and communities.

Gary Holman, who’s riding includes Salt Spring and other Gulf Islands, says a recent Union of BC Municipalities report shows clearly that there is no benefit right now.

Several government MLAs defended the Liberal record, but the Transportation Minister wasn’t among them. There hasn’t been a vote yet.

Another aspect of the Ferries debate that’s getting a lot of attention right now is the level of support from the federal government.

Both the opposition and the government have raised the issue.

West Vancouver Sunshine Coast MP John Weston wrote a newspaper editorial recently saying comparing BC Ferries and Marine Atlantic is “an apples and oranges argument”.

However, Weston says there is possible role for the federal government, through the Build Canada Fund.

Weston says it could help with the looming cost of terminal upgrades, especially at Horseshoe Bay, which is in his riding.
