Sex Trade Cohort starting new initiatives

Nanaimo’s Sex Trade Cohort is moving on to the next phase of trying to protect vulnerable people working in the industry.

The cohort, established two years ago, involves local non-profits societie providing frontline services, the RCMP, City of Nanaimo and Island Health.

Social Planner John Horn says their initial goal was to develop some safety systems, including a “Bad Date Sheet”, and a system to quickly determine if a sex trade workers is missing.

That done, they’re now looking at concrete steps to do things like help people in the sex trade get out.

Horn says that could include specialized counselling services, or a safe house, where people wanting to get out of the sex trade could find refuge.
