Two men managed to swim to safety after their tugboat sank near Halfmoon Bay.

Captain Todd Guenther, air coordinator at the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria, says they got a call at about 3:40pm saying a tugboat was sinking off Merry Island.

He says he’s not exactly sure how far the skipper and the deckhand would have had to swim to reach the shore.

Guenther says the tugboat’s name is Syringa. It’s not clear why it sank. He says the Coast Guard’s Environmental Response department will be in charge of whatever happens next with the sunken vessel.
