Full house for public hearing on Gibsons OCP update

Not much support for a proposed update to the Official Community Plan in Gibsons at a public hearing last night.

A group calling itself the “Gibsons Waterfront Defense Association” was working ahead of the hearing to encourage a big turnout.

Among the speakers who came forward from the crowd of 200-plus were former mayoral candidate Suzanne Senger, former mayor Barry Janyk, and former councillor Dan Bouman.

Others who got up to speak raised concerns that an OCP Steering Commitee was ignored, claimed the changes are mainly to smooth the way for a big hotel project, and that was a need for tighter restrictions on building heights.

There was also some praise; mainly for increased aquifer protections.
