Nanaimo given 1 month to deal with Colliery Dams

The Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society is hoping the City isn’t spooked by a recent letter from the Dam Safety Section.

It says the City has exactly one month to come up with a precise plan for dealing with the risk posed by the Colliery Dams.

Jeff Soloman with the Colliery Dam Park Preservation Society, says the DSS is threatening to take away the City’s water license for the dam, or drain the lakes.

Councillors voted on February 2 to put the decision process on hold, in favour of holding more consultations with stakeholders.

Soloman says the City should continue with the plan they laid out at the beginning of the month, and not rush in the wake the letter.

Meanwhile, Mayor Bill McKay says the City will need to get some legal advice to figure out their options.
