SCRD outlines new zoning proposals for medical marijuana

It wasn’t a big crowd, but there was a lot of interest last night as the Sunshine Coast Regional District outlined proposed zoning for medical marijuana facilities.

The SCRD already allows them on lots bigger than 8 hectares or in ALR and industrial zones.

But, Roberts Creek Director Mark Lebell says based on the response to those rules, they’re considering going to 1 hectare in Roberts Creek and Elphinstone.

Elphinstone Director Lorne Lewis says even with uncertainty around federal rules, it’s a good idea for the SCRD to have its regulations settled as soon as possible.

Several concerns were raised around security, odour, parking and the possible look of the buildings.

The proponent behind a facility in an SCRD industrial park, that’s waiting for Health Canada approval was also on hand.

He told the group based on their experience he doesn’t think there’s going to be a rush to set up small scale operations

The zoning proposal will likely go to public hearing in the spring
