Islands Trust Fund eelgrass map goes online

A detailed map of eelgrass beds around all the islands in the Salish Sea has just been made available online.

The Islands Trust Fund has been working on the project for two years, in partnership with the SeaChange Marine Conservation Society.

Kate Emmings is the Islands Trust Fund’s Ecosystem Protection Specialist.  She says the goal of the project was to identify crucial marine habitat.

Eelgrass is important habitat for young fish, and some larger creatures rely on it too for shelter and food. Emmings says eelgrass beds are also a good place to spot interesting species, like colourful sea slugs, so snorkelers and divers may be interested in the eelgrass map too.

You can check out the eelgrass map online.
