Throne Speech leaves local NDP MLAs underwhelmed

NDP MLAs in the Island Coastal region say the Liberals were backing away from big promises about LNG in today’s Throne Speech, but they’re not sold on the government’s talk of a “diversified” economy.

Nanaimo-North Cowichan MLA Doug Routley is one of the NDP’s forestry critics.

The government is also saying it will set up a Rural Advisory Committee. But Powell River Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons says he’s worried the government isn’t listening to elected representatives from those communities.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Mike de Jong will table the budget in Victoria next week. Nanaimo NDP MLA Leonard Krog says the underwhelming Throne Speech is an indication that the budget is going to be a weak one.
