Hundreds protest ferry cuts in coordinated rallies on Sunshine Coast and Gabriola Island

Hundreds of protestors turned out Saturday between the Langdale and Earls Cove ferry terminals on the Sunshine Coast, and on Gabriola Island, to speak out against proposed cuts to BC Ferries.

The demonstrators want the plan for service reductions scrapped and a fresh, more meaningful, round of talks between the Ministry of Transportation and ferry dependent communities.  Some are also calling for BC Ferries to come back under the full control of MOTI.

Jef Keighley of the Sunshine Coast based BC Ferry Coalition was at one of the largest rallies, in Sechelt, which drew more than 400 people.  He says the protests will continue, likely with more communities getting involved.

Sunshine Coast Regional District Chair Garry Nohr was at the Sechelt rally and one in Halfmoon Bay.  He says the group of RD Chairs that’s been lobbying the government on ferries issues is going to be keeping up the pressure on the Premier.
