Nanaimo RCMP nab B&E suspect

A 23 year old Nanaimo man is appearing in provincial court after being arrested when someone tried to break into a restaurant.

RCMP say a witness called 9-1-1 to say they’d seen a man with his face covered, trying to break through the door of Original Joes on the Island Highway around 6:30 Thursday morning.

As police got there, the man took off on a bicycle, and led the officers on a 40 minute chase.  Working with a dog team, they eventual found their suspect trying to hide under a tarp at a nearby business.

Constable Gary O’Brien speaks for Nanaimo RCMP.  He says this is another example of RCMP being able to act quickly on a crime because a conscientious citizen took the time to call and report something suspicious.

The man is also facing drug charges after a search turned up some marijuana, and O’Brien says investigators are looking into whether he might be connected to any unsolved break-ins in the city, which has a seen a jump in B&Es this month.
