New Target Marine zoning passes first reading

Sechelt Council has given first reading to the latest zoning changes requested by Target Marine Hatcheries.

The company was granted the zoning to process sturgeon grown on site for meat and caviar two years ago, but only after court challenges from neighbours and a referendum in the 2011 election.

Now the company wants to expand into processing of other fish, and something called “aquaponics”, which is the commercial production of aquatic plant grown in the tanks with the fish.

Councillor Alice Lutes says she’s always supported the business, but is voting in favour of this latest application with some reluctance.

Before the re-zoning goes forward it will be subject to a public hearing, but a date has not yet been set.
