Nanaimo SPCA wants to see more teeth in animal bylaws, especially for cats

Owners leaving dogs in hot cars or chained up all the time is a problem in Nanaimo, but the Executive Director of the local SPCA says there are issues around cats too.

Leon Davis says they’re hoping the city will make changes to the animal control bylaws.

Davis says they’re not suggesting having cat catchers on the streets. But he says a bylaw around licensing cats, and making spaying or neutering mandatory would be a good start.

City staff are recommending responsible ownership guidelines for dogs, but the recommend Council leave the rules for cats as they are.
