The NDP claims the Clark government is avoiding the issue of agriculture, so they’re taking the matter into their own hands.
The party is forming a new Opposition Standing Committee on Agriculture and Food. The name is a shot at the Clark government, which did away with the legislature’s committee on the topic.
Powell River Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons will be one of the five NDP MLAs on the committee.
Simons says the committee is partly a response to sweeping changes to the rules on the Agricultural Land Reserve, but there are other issues at play.
Simons says the committee will host public consultations around the province to gather feedback on the government’s agriculture policies. He says they’ll relay what they hear to the Minister of Agriculture and his colleagues in cabinet.
