Forum in Nanaimo focusing on issue of child poverty

BC has the highest child poverty rates in Canada and a forum this afternoon in Nanaimo will take a closer look at the issue. Called “Changing the Dynamics of Poverty for Children and Families”, it’s being organized by Nanaimo’s Ending Poverty Together Coalition.

Co-founder Joanne Bevis says they’ve invited three knowledgeable speakers who will focus on issues including the need for a living wage and affordable childcare. Mid-Island Medical Health Officer Dr. Paul Hasselback will also be speaking about the impact of poverty on child development.

Bevis says she hopes the event brings awareness to the issue of child poverty, and prompts people to start pushing for change.

The free event at Beban Park Social Centre runs from 1:00pm-3:30pm.
