Squamish Council turns down Fortis application for test drilling tied to Woodfibre LNG project

Councillors in Squamish have turned down Fortis’ application for test drilling in an estuary as part of a pipeline expansion to get natural gas to the proposed Woodfibre LNG plant.

It was a close vote, though: 4 to 3

A gas pipeline already runs through the area; it’s the same line that serves the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island.

The main issue is possible damage to the estuary, but there are also wider concerns about the impact of an LNG plant on the Howe Sound region.

Newly elected Mayor Patricia Heintzman, says she doesn’t think the project is in the best interests of the community.
