Two homes on Townsite Rd targeted by thief

Two different homeowners in Nanaimo chased off a would-be thief over the weekend and police think the same suspect was involved in the incidents. They both happened on Townsite Rd, and in both cases, the thief didn’t manage to actually steal anything.

The first incident happened just before 9:30pm on Friday, January 16. A homeowner at 1250 Townsite Rd came face-to-face with a man in his garage. He chased the suspect but lost sight of him near Bush St. Items taken from the garage were found in an alley behind the home.

The second incident was reported just before 1:30am on Saturday, just two houses away at 1230 Townsite Rd. The homeowners woke up after hearing noises and confronted a thief. Again, the suspect was chased to the Bush St area before disappearing.

The suspect in both cases is described as white, 5’10”, in his mid-20s, wearing a dark hoodie and dark track pants.

“It appears the same person may have been involved in both occurrences,” said Constable Gary O’Brien. “In the first break in, the suspect entered through an unlocked door to the garage while in the second, he gained access by climbing through a small window partially opened but blocked with wooden dowel.”

RCMP are reminding homeowners to keep all exterior doors locked and windows. They’re telling people to make sure nothing in their yard can be used to access windows, like ladders, step stools or boxes.

Nanaimo RCMP are asking anyone with information to call them at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
