A $70,000 grant means Nanaimo’s Tillicum Lelum Aboriginal Friendship Centre can double the number of emergency beds for at-risk youth.
They’re adding four beds to their Aboriginal Youth Safe House, thanks to the boost from Nanaimo’s Social Planning Advisory Committee.
The money comes a fund topped up annually by casino revenue, and it’s a one-time grant. That has Councillor Jerry Hong a little worried.
Tillicum Lellum is also applying for funding from the province, which would let them to keep the beds open beyond this year.
