Sechelt FN halts Francis Point longhouse build

Construction has stopped on a Sechelt First Nation longhouse at Francis Point Provincial Park in Pender Harbour.

The area is part of the Sechelt traditional territory, but it turns out the Park isn’t actually Crown land.

It’s private property owned property leased to BC Parks by the Nature Trust of Canada and the Nature Conservancy of Canada.   The Francis Point Marine Park Society, which raised the money to buy the land, is concerned because they want minimal human impact.

Speaking on Coast TV, Chief Calvin Craigan said they’re expecting the situation to be resolved soon.

Craigan also says the Sechelt First Nation’s interests in protecting the land mesh with those of the Trust and the Conservancy.
