The City of Nanaimo is trying to figure out who illegally cut down some trees.
In mid-November, 12 large trees were cut down on a piece of public property between Hammond Bay Rd and Laguna Way. The land had recently been turned over to the City as part of a subdivision development, and it had been designated as parkland.
Allan Kemp is the City’s Urban Forestry Coordinator. He says two alders, two Douglas firs and eight western large-leaf maples were removed without permission.
Kemp says, if convicted, those responsible could be fined up to $10,000 per tree under the City’s Parks Bylaw.
Anyone with information is asked to call Nanaimo’s Bylaw Department at 250-755-4422.
