"Full volume" test of Colliery Dams warning sirens Jan 15, 10:30am

Emergency planners in Nanaimo are holding the first “full volume” test of warning sirens in Colliery Dams flood zone.

The sirens will sound at 10:30 Wednesday morning (Jan 15) and go for 3 minutes.  People signed up for the City’s Call Alert system will be getting an automated voice message just ahead of the test.

Students and staff at John Barsby School, meanwhile, are planning an evacuation drill to coordinate with the siren test.

The City says residents and businesses in the area won’t have to take any action, but they are warning people to avoid standing directly below the sirens while they’re going off.

After today, regular tests will happen on the first Wednesday of every month.  But it will be at half-volume and for only 30 seconds.
