Power restored in Nanaimo after crash causes widespread outage

A 26-year-old man sustained minor injuries after his car hit a power pole on Tuesday morning, causing a widespread power outage.

His 2003 Toyota Echo struck hit median at Bowen Rd and Dufferin Cres, before veering in the other direction into a power pole.

Nanaimo RCMP, Nanaimo Fire and Rescue, and BC Ambulance responded. The man was taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital as a precaution.

Investigators think he may have fallen asleep at the wheel. Alcohol and speed are not considered factors in the crash.

At its peak, the outage was affecting 2700 BC Hydro customers. The power has since been restored.
