Survey says NRGH nurses are stressed by CDMR

The BC Nurses Union says the results of a survey by Island Health paint a disturbing picture of how nurses at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital are handling the new care delivery model redesign. Island Health surveyed nurses in October after their CDMR was implemented, which replaced some nurses with Care Aides.

Of the 140 nurses surveyed, 83 per cent said they disagreed that the right type of care is being provided to patients at the right time by the most appropriate health care provider. 90 per cent said baseline staffing is inadequate to address the average workload on their unit, and 88 per cent said they wouldn’t want their family members to be cared for in their unit. BCNU Pacific Rim Regional Chair Jo Salken says the survey result can’t be ignored.

Salken says the BCNU is calling on Island Health to stop the implementation of the CDMR in Victoria, which is planned for April. She says it’s critical that VIHA address concerns in Nanaimo first. Island Health is also conducting a second internal survey of NRGH nurses, so Salken says the BCNU is keen to see the latest survey results.
