Gibsons looking for OK from province to write off tax bill owed by mobile home owner

An unusual situation for the Town of Gibsons.

Council is making a request to the province to write off around 430 dollars in back taxes owing on a mobile home. It’s in a small mobile home park that’s part of the Irwin Motel on Gibsons Way.

Town staff say they’ve tried to contact the owner in the time since the 2012 tax bill went unpaid, with no luck, and they don’t think there’s any chance of collecting the money. They also say although the home isn’t officially condemned, they consider it “uninhabitable”.

One reason the amount owing is so small is that mobile home owners who rent pad space are only taxed on the value of the building; in this case it’s assessed at 18-thousand 800 dollars. The owners of the mobile home park are the ones who pay taxes on the land, and that bill is up to date.
