Conservation Officers on the Sunshine Coast say they think a cougar they were forced to kill was one of the trio that caused a media stir earlier this month.
The three cougars were photographed walking along a beach in Roberts Creek January 2nd, in broad daylight. The unusual nature of the sighting led to an outpouring of social, and traditional, media attention.
Conservation Officer Dean Miller says it’s likely it was a mother and two older kits, and that sometime in the past week or so the kits were left on their own – which isn’t unusual.
Miller says, unfortunately, one seemed to be staking out territory in a populated area near a school. It was shot Monday afternoon, about a block away from the Sun Haven Waldorf School on Margaret Road.
Miller says they think the mother has likely returned to the forests, but the other kit may still be in the Roberts Creek area and they’re encouraging residents to report any sightings to Conservation at: 1-877-952-7277
This is only the second time a cougar has had to be killed on the lower Sunshine Coast since April.
