The BC Nurses Union is raising fresh concerns about the Care Delivery Model Redesign recently introduced at Nanaimo Regional General.
The union says in trying to fill 85 new care aide jobs as the CDMR rolls out to other Island Hospitals they’ll end up poaching from long term care facilities.
Island Health is encouraging current employees to apply for those positions, and BCNU Pacific Rim Regional Chair Chair Jo Salken says she’s worried that could create a staffing shortage.
Rita den Otter, Island Health’s Executive Leader for the CDMR, says offering first crack at new jobs to internal candidates is their standard policy.
She also says they’re working to make sure there are no gaps, and they’re also talking with colleges to make sure there are enough qualified people graduating to fill some of the jobs.
