Man drowns in Nanaimo River

RCMP say a 73 year old man, who was pulled from the Nanaimo River Tuesday, has died.
He had been swimming with friends upstream of the Duke Point Highway when he went into distress.
He was not wearing a life jacket and became unresponsive.
His friends managed to pull him from the river and start CPR.
A passing motorcyclist, who witnessed the incident, called 911 from a nearby business and then returned to help with first aid.

Emergency crews transported the unconscious man to the hospital where he succumbed from his injuries.

An investigation into the incident is on-going and the victim’s name has not been released.  (stock photo)
