Poverty group supports the throne speech overall

The Legislature will resume Monday and the NDP have indicated they will try to bring about a confidence vote despite a throne speech that sounded more like it came from the New Democrats than the Christy Clark Liberals.
The Speech called for a Poverty Reduction Strategy.
The NDP have called for such a plan for a number of years but the Liberals, up to the day of the Throne Speech, had insisted the government does not think a formal plan is necessary, and has instead focused on job creation and what it calls “targeted supports” for individuals.
Adrienne Montani, of First Call, a B.C. child and youth advocacy group, says that was never a good idea…..
Montani says it now appears it doesn’t matter who forms the government when the dust eventually settles, a Poverty Reduction Strategy is on the books and will, hopefully, be coming down the pipeline.
Montani says the Clark government’s promise of adding one billion dollars to the budget to create more childcare spaces falls a little flat…..

Montani says it was good to see some attention paid the responding to mental health issues in the community as well.
