Almost daily the Nanaimo Fire Rescue is called out to attend to a backyard burn.
Umesh Lal, Fire Prevention Officer says backyard burning is banned except by permit and there are some hoops you have to jump through to get one.
He says there are a couple of reasons why there are restrictions on backyard burning…..
Backyard burning is only allowed on properties of an acre or more, or on Protection Island in April and November and there’s a 200 dollar fine for burning without a permit.
