Major municipal convention kicks off

The UBCM convention gets going today (Mon) in Victoria.
President of the Union of BC Municipalities, Al Richmond says a highlight for many delegates is the opportunity to talk to provincially elected officials….
The 1200, or so, delegates will talk about marijuana sales and tax sharing opportunities, but also issues surrounding community safety and transportation like bicycle lanes and passenger rail service.
They’ll also talk about environmental issues, like oil spill response and watershed protection among a raft of other issues.
177 resolutions, in all, are on the table for discussion.

Sunshine Coast Regional District Chair Gary Nohr says he plans to talk to a few different ministers about the issues on the Sunshine Coast at this convention.

Nohr says the convention is a great opportunity to network and learn about other communities and how they’re making improvements.

The Mayor of Nanaimo, Bill Mckay says he’s looking forward to the conference for the networking opportunities it presents…..
He says he’s also looking forward to hearing more about dealing with governance issues.
