Encampment has to go

A small group of people who have been living under the Pearson Bridge in Nanaimo have been told they have to leave.
According to the Ministry of Transportation the area they are living in is not safe over the long-term and the presence of the encampment is causing the slope and the soil to erode which can undermine the integrity of the bridge.
To repair the damage, the ministry says they will begin work to mitigate soil erosion and stabilize the slope.
The Ministry claims they are working with the local RCMP and the city to find alternate living arrangements for the people living under the bridge.
Executive director of the Salvation Army’s New Hope Centre, Rob Anderson says there are some shelter beds available…
Anderson says there are two shelters in town where the homeless can go if need be.
This work is expected to begin next week.
