MP has good news and bad for ferries

It seems an opportunity to expand the capacity at the shipyards in B.C. has been squandered.
The feds are claiming shipbuilding in B.C. is at capacity and as a result removed the tariffs on the importation of new ships to Canada.
That made it more appealing for companies, like BC Ferries who were waiting with an order for new vessels to go elsewhere in the world.
Nanaimo-Ladysmith MP Sheila Malcolmson says the problem is circular….
There is good news though.
The federal government will now consider applications from BC Ferries for infrastructure like terminals and new vessels in the Building Canada Fund.
Malcolmson says BC Ferries should now be able to tap into federal money for those projects and that means ferry passengers won’t have to foot the whole bill.
She says it’s not the answer to all the problems in the ferry system though……
She figures ferries should be treated like transit where the public, as a whole, funds projects like new bus shelters.
In the ferry system the user pays.
