Local governments keen to see if Liberals live up to infrastructure promises

Municipal leaders are going to be watching the new Liberal government closely.

During the campaign prime minister designate Justin Trudeau made a lot of promises around funding for infrastructure, long a bone of contention for local governments.

Mayor Bruce Milne of Sechelt says he’s confident the new government, and the new local MP, have a good sense of the needs of municipalities.

Bill McKay is mayor of Nanaimo, he says areas like housing and transportation are key opportunities for federal involvement at the local level.

During the campaign the Liberals said they’d get the billions of dollars needed for their infrastructure spending by running three years of budget deficits
